Wesley Hospital moves to the top of the class

> Transpacific's waste management partnership with the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane has seen the hospital obtain an O.A (Outstanding Achievement) rating.

The Wesley Hospital achieved this rating, which is the highest standard of accreditation and recognition within the Australian Council of Health Care Standards, largely due to its commitment to reducing waste and reducing the impact waste collection and management has on the environment. It is also considered a leader in cost containment.

Brendan McGovern, Wesley Hospital Environmental Services Manager said: “The management team at Transpacific has shown excellent leadership in exploring waste solutions with us. We believe that the innovative approach to achieving very good business outcomes displayed by Transpacific has led to a strong partnership arrangement which has benefited both our businesses, froma financial as well as a quality perspective.”

Transpacific’s contract with the Wesley involves looking after waste streams including clinical waste, cardboard and recycling, and residual general waste.

Through regular audits of the Wesley’s sites, Transpacific has helped the hospital reduce the amount of waste it produces for collection, cutting down on the frequency of waste collections.

Transpacific Key Accounts Sales Manager Terry Dalton said: “By reducing waste truck movements on site we are reducing the impact this process has on the environment.

“With Transpacific’s help the Wesley has reduced its clinical waste by 75 per cent which equates to a saving of approximately $150,000 per year,” he said.

Transpacific also encouraged the capture of cardboard waste and installed a cardboard compactor to reduce the frequency of truck pick-ups resulting in lower costs for the Wesley.

Looking forward, Transpacific is investigating the use of our Harvest Recycling Program to recycle packaging waste including cardboard,
polystyrene and clear plastic.

Harvest is an industry leading recycling program that cleverly includes cling wrap, polystyrene, paper and cardboard in a single bin.

“Transpacific has had an ongoing partnership with the Wesley Hospital and is continually looking at ways to provide tailored solutions to support its business needs,” Terry said.

“We maintain a high level of interaction with this client that involves extensive reporting on its waste management, a high range of innovative solutions to suit its needs and an ongoing commitment to strive for new solutions,” he said.
